I was working my way through a newspaper this morning and noted the front page article on Easter and how some churches around the valley are celebrating. While I was on my mission, the whole politically correct thing of only saying Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas so as not to offend anyone happened. I found it to be pretty interesting that we as a country with freedom of religion are trying so hard to be free of religion.
I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, more commonly known as the Mormons. I'm not especially ashamed of that fact, and I really wish that people would stop trying to make me feel so. I enjoy studying other religions. I have attended other churches and intend to continue doing so, because I just enjoy it. I am glad that we haven't reached the point in Cache Valley where talking about Easter on the front page of the newspaper isn't taboo. I'm glad that at this point we have freedom of religion and not freedom from religion.

I feel you on this issue seeing as how we are living in Logan, and the vast majority of the people in this town celebrate Easter in one way or another, just as you and I do. I think the only issue with this is in your major cities where there are so many different religions and backgrounds that maybe talking about Easter on the front page may belittle the other religions as they may not ever get that front page article about say Yam Kippor, passover, Kwanzaa etc. This could easily offend many people and in a way seem like the newspaper would be possibly setting it's own norm by putting a story like this on the front page.
ReplyDeleteI think the front page coverage was appropriate given that the celebration is big news. It isn't about being fair, it's just news. I don't see how talking about one religion belittles another. If there was a Yam Kippur celebration that was newsworthy, I think we should cover it. It's just news.

I am glad to see that the Herald Journal will still publish that on the front page. I am from Logan and as far as I can remember there has always been something concerning Easter on the front page on Easter Day. I think that it is great. I feel that all to often the Majority has to succumb to the Minority to stay politically correct.
ReplyDeleteI feel like the majority should succumb to the minority at least a little, otherwise you end up with the majority just slowly taking over. If the majority never succumbs how can the minority ever be heard? Like Utah for example. Utah will always remain in controlled by the Mormon religion because there is such a big majority here in control right now. 62% Mormon I just read in an article.
